Trinidad Commonwealth Scholarships
The Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is offering twelve (12) scholarships under the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan tenable at the University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine Trinidad and Tobago or the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) for the academic year commencing September 2010.
The scholarships are for post graduate studies in the areas of Science and Agriculture, Social Sciences, Engineering, Humanities and Education, Institute for International Relations and the Institute of Business. Two (2) of the eight (8) awards offered will be for the pursuit of studies in the field of medicine.
Deadline
Nominations should be submitted to the Establishment, Personnel and Training Department (EPTD) on or before Thursday, March 11, 2010.
Nominations
The EPTD will submit no more than two (2) nominations for these scholarships. All applicants must possess a Bachelor’s Degree with at least Second Class Honours from a recognised university.
Applications
All applicants must submit six (6) copies of the application on the prescribed form together with six (6) copies of all supporting documents except the birth certificate, of which only one (1) copy is required.

Eligibility
Scholarships are open equally to men and women who are citizens of another commonwealth country. There is no age restriction however, preference will be given to candidates who have obtained a university degree within the last ten (10) years.
Language
All courses will be taught in English and applicants should speak and write in English fluently.
All applicants whose native language is not English are required to perform satisfactorily in an English proficiency test set by the UWI St. Augustine or UTT. This test would be administered at a recognised university nearest to the applicant.
Duration of Scholarship
The duration of the scholarship depends on the type of degree pursued. The type of degrees that may be pursued are as follows:
- Master – 12-18 Months with no provision for extension.
- M.Phil – 2 years with provision for extension to a maximum of six months.
- Ph.D – 3 years with provision for extension to a maximum period of one (1) year.
Scholarship Details
The scholarship covers the following expenses:
- Transportation by air from the nominating country to Trinidad and return for the applicants as arranged by the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
- Tuition and examination fees.
- Any other compulsory university fees (excluding board and residence fees).
- A personal maintenance allowance of TT$3,000.00 per month to cover board and lodging, daily travel and personal expenses.
- Cost of approved travelling connected with the course of study in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to a maximum of TT$720.00 per annum.
- Book allowance of TT$3,846.00 per annum.
- An allowance of TT$2,500.00 to assist with thesis preparation.
Reasonable hotel charges as agreed upon by the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago for a period of one (1) week after arrival in Trinidad to permit the applicant to find suitable accommodation where government accommodation is not provided.
No dependent allowance is payable so therefore, applicants who plan on bringing their families to Trinidad and Tobago should have sufficient financial resources for their support.
The Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago will not be responsible for meeting the cost of airfare for the applicant’s spouse and children who must have return tickets to their homeland valid for the duration of their stay in Trinidad and Tobago.
The above allowances are not subject to tax in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
General Conditions of the Scholarship
- All applicants must return to their own country at the end of their scholarship.
- All applicants must follow the approved course of study and abide by the rules of the UWI St. Augustine or UTT.
- A scholarship may be terminated at any time for reasons of unsatisfactory conduct, for breach of the conditions of the scholarship or for failure to make satisfactory progress.
- Applicants will not normally be permitted to take up paid employment during the duration of the scholarship.
- Applicants will be expected to reside in Trinidad and Tobago throughout the duration of their studies and to seek prior approval for any proposed visit abroad.
- Once selected for a scholarship, the applicant would be required to submit application forms for admission to the UWI St. Augustine or UTT directly to that institution.
