High Court dimisses four out of six petitions filed against the ruling Dominica Labour Party

The high court on Wednesday, 25th August, 2010 ruled that the petitions filed against Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit and education minister Hon. Petter Saint Jean on allegations of dual citizenship will go to trial.

The petitions were just two of several petitions filed by the opposition united workers party following the December 2009 general elections.

The others however were struck out when the ruling was read Wednesday morning.

Prime Minister Skerrit promises stiffer penalties for persons in possession of illegal firearms

Stiffer penalties will be passed in parliament soon for persons found with illegal firearms. Hon. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit made the announcement recently on Wednesday, 11th August as he addressed the official ground breaking ceremony of the new grand bay police station.

PM Skerrit and Venezuela Ambassador break ground for new police station at Grand Bay

The Government of Dominica on Wednesday broke ground for the construction of the new Grand Bay Police Station. The construction of the main police station building and the inspector’s quarters are being financed by the governments of Venezuela and Dominica at a cost of 3.6 million dollars.

The new police station will serve the communities of Grand Bay, Pichelin, Petite Savanne, Bellevue Chopin, Bagatelle, Fond St Jean, Dubique, Stowe and Tête Morne.

Foreign Affairs Minister of the Kingdom of Morocco Taieb Fassi Fihri is currently in Dominica seeking to strengthen ties between the two countries. Dominica established diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Morocco in June 2010.

On Monday 10th August, the Foreign Affairs Minister of Morocco met with the Hon. Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, Hon. Minister for Employment and Trade, Dr. Colin McIntyre and Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sen. Alvin Bernard.

 

 

Tourism Minister calls for greater support for the annual World Creole Music Festival

Hon. Minister for Tourism, Ian Douglas, is calling for increased support for Dominica’s annual World Creole Music Festival. The Minister made that appeal while addressing the official launch of this year’s festival last week.

Ministry of Health issues dengue alert amidst rising cases found in the Caribbean

The Ministry of Health in a press release dated July 21st, 2010 has issued an alert to Dominicans amidst the rising number of cases with persons contracting dengue across the Caribbean.

The press release states, “As you may be aware there is a Dengue outbreak in the Americas. It is presently in the French islands but IT IS NOT IN DOMINICA.

Therefore the Ministry of Health is taking preventive measures. The Ministry of Health, the Environmental Health Department and affiliates will engage in a National campaign strategy for integrated management for the dengue prevention and control.

Hon. Prime Minister Skerrit presents a four hundred and forty million dollar budget for the 2010/2011 financial year

On Tuesday, 13th July, Hon. Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit presented a 440.3 million dollar budget to parliament when parliament met on that day. In his budget address themed, “Pathways to a Higher Level”, the Finance Minister outlined his reasons for his choosing of the theme based on three points.

“Let me at the outset make three basic points, three basic truths perhaps, about taking our country to the next level. The first is that it is an objective that we all share and one that we should all wish to achieve, even if there may be different ideas about how we might get there. The second is that we are all very clear as to what we mean by the next level. It is a term that reflects the vision and aspirations of all of us, for an enhanced standard and quality of life as identified through all those developments, material and non-material, that are important to our happiness..."

The Banana Industry Trust on Wednesday, 7th July, 2010 officially commissioned the Fond Colé Inland Reception and Distribution Centre (IRDC). The facility was built with funds provided by the European Commission under its Special Framework of Assistance.

The $4,050,021 centre will be used for reception, consolidation and storage of fresh bananas for export as well as for training of farmers, cold storage, sale and distribution of production inputs and packaging materials.

In his brief remarks at the ceremony, Hon. Parliamentary Representative for the Roseau North Constituency, Julius Timothy said that one cannot over emphasize the importance of investing in agriculture.

Dominica State College to introduce a new programme in September

The Dominica State College in the months ahead is expected to become more focussed on student’s success. That’s according to director of the continuing education department of the college Merrill Matthew. Mr. Matthew made that disclosure during an interview with GIS news this on the 25th of June, 2010.

“What that means, for us, as a management team, is that we are very focused on the success of students so that everything we do, everything we plan, everything we organise has to be connected with student’s success. Therefore, in the upcoming months, we expect that this mission will drive the Dominica State College forward where everything become very student centred and very student focused. Everything is going to be centred on the success of students whether is it training, classroom teaching or curriculum development.”

New president for Dominica State College

Dominica State College (DSC) now has a new President. Dr. Donald C. Peters took over as President of the DSC on June 1st, 2012 after the departure of Mr. Hubert Charles, now Dominica’s Permanent Ambassador to the Organisation of American States, OAS.

Ninety-four students complete the first phase of their journey towards higher education at the Dominica Grammar School

Ninety-four students of the Dominica Grammar School received certificates when they graduated from the institution of learning after completing at least five (5) years of secondary school education when the Dominica Grammar School (DGS) hosted its 2010 graduation ceremony at the Arawak House of Culture on Wednesday, 23rd June, 2010.

The ceremony was conducted with the theme, “An Investment in Knowledge Pays the Best Interest”. Among the invited guests was the Hon. Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Alvin Bernard, Chief Education Officer, Mr. Steve Hyacinth, other officials from the Ministry of Education, representative from the Venezuelan Embassy, past school principal of the DGS, Mr. Felix Wilson and Reverend Peter Hill, featured speaker.

Cultural Ministers of the Bolivarian Alternative to the Americas (ALBA) convenes third meeting in Roseau, Dominica

Twenty (20) officials from eight (8) countries inclusive of Ministers of Culture and Higher Authorities, the ALBA Cultural Fund and the ALBA Bank met in Dominica from June 15th to 17th 2010 for the third (3rd) Meeting of the Ministers of Culture and Higher Authorities of the ALBA Nations.

The meeting which was held at the Fort Young Hotel opened with formal opening ceremony at the Hotel on Wednesday, 16th June, 2010. Addressing the official opening ceremony, Dominica’s Chief Cultural Officer and ALBA Cultural Coordinator explained that this 3rd meeting was a fulfilment of proposal and acceptance of that proposal by former Minister of Culture, Lorraine Bannis-Roberts.

OECS Agriculture Ministers chart a new way forward for agricultural produce in the OECS

Agriculture Ministers of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) are poised to revitalize agriculture across the sub region in a quest to lower food prices. The OECS Agriculture Ministers convened a meeting in St. Kitts from May 31 to June 1, 2010.

The meeting discussed ways to focus on the growth and development of agriculture within the OECS Economic Union.

Discover Dominica Authority continues to promote Dominica as an ideal tourist destination

There has been a heightened level of online marketing of Dominica as an ideal travel destination. These efforts are being spearheaded by the Discover Dominica Authority. Head of that entity Colin Piper has disclosed that several contests were initiated within online magazines all geared at promoting the island.

“We singled out five (5) magazines that we have done online contest with. They are ‘Matador’, ‘Good’, ‘Yoga’, ‘Went’ and ‘Backpacker’. We have concluded that about four (4) of those with the exception of Backpacker is ongoing. “

Dominica’s Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit has announced the date of the by-elections in the Salisbury and Marigot seats. The Dominica leader made the announcement during a press statement on Monday 7th, June, 2010.

“I have also advised that nomination day should be 21st of June, 2010 and that polling day should be on the 9th of July, 2010.”
