Road works in progress on the Canefield to Melville Hall Airport Road Project
Work has commenced on the first phase of the Canefield to Melville Hall Road Development Project. The 29.4 million dollar project includes the rehabilitation of the Canefield to Pond Casse section of the Roseau to Melville Hall Road and is expected to be completed within twelve (12) months.
The new Minister for Public Works and Infrastructural Development, Hon. Rayburn Blackmoore, paid a visit to the site on Monday, 8th December, to get a first hand view of the progress and gave reasons for his visit.
“It is important for us to see work manifesting itself on the ground. One will appreciate that the contract for round one (1) of the airport road was signed on the 20th of August, 2008. The contractors had to mobilise but we are happy that work has already started.”

The road, upon completion, will greatly enhance the road network in that part of the island. Minister Blackmoore feels that because the road networks the main airport on the island with many parts of the island, it is important that the road be improved so as to mitigate the dangers previously experienced especially in times of inclement weather.
Works to be undertaken include ground replacement and or deep patching in localised areas of road surface distress, pre cast concrete roadside barrier sections, roadside parking areas for access to sites of eco-tourism interest in several locations, signs and markings throughout, replacement and extension to concrete box and pipe culverts, some improvement works to the existing concrete deck at Springfield and cast in place concrete retaining walls as well as some gabion retaining walls. It will also entail some planting and slope erosion control measures.

The first phase of the project will entail the rehabilitation of twelve point three (12.3) kilometres of road while the second phase of the project which is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2009 will entail work on another twenty-eight point eight (28.8) kilometres of roadway.
Funding for the entire Canefield to Melville Hall Airport road development project was initially expected to be provided by the Agence Francaise Development at a cost of fifty-six (56) million dollars (XCD$56 000 000.00). |
