Young people as well as adults wishing to be introduced to an artistic pastime this summer will have an opportunity to do so through the Division of Culture’s summer arts program.
Chief Cultural Officer, Raymond Lawrence, said that the Cultural Division is once again creating an avenue whereby children as well as adults can do something interesting and fun during the summer.
Lawrence was a specially invited guest on GIS “Insight Programme” hosted by Tarnia Green on Thursday morning.
He said that a two week intense training program has been planned for children in August.

“For the children, we are going to have two age categories: seven to ten and eleven to seventeen. This programme is a focus programme; a two-week intensive training programme for children that will run from the 8th to the 19th of August, 2011. Persons can register from now. The children from the seven to ten category will be doing things like art and craft, recorder, quarto, choir, dance and those from eleven to seventeen: steelpan, art and craft, wood carving and choral speech.”
Lawrence said that the adult programme has already begun.
“We have things like art, guitar, wood-carving, banana leaf doll, creole head tying, drumming. We also have some courses in Portsmouth, Wesley and Marigot as well. Portsmouth is steelpan and drumming, Wesley is drumming and Marigot is art. We are trying to do things across the island during the summer time to get people involved in developing their skills and talents. Some people just want to do a course in something that they have always been interested in but never had the time for. So we feel that this time is a good time for that kind of activity.”
The Cultural Division is encouraged by the interest demonstrated by the general public towards the summer arts program.
“Every year, it has been good. Of course, people have different taste, different areas they want to pursue so sometimes you find that you offer some things and you probably do not get as many people as you expect but then you get people for some things that they really want to do.”
This year’s summer arts programme will culminate with a certificate presentation ceremony at the end of August where participants will be recognized for their participation. |
