Land being cleared at Bellevue Rawle for housing development
Government is now putting the necessary infrastructure and public utilities in place to accommodate a new housing development in the Bellevue Rawle area. Earlier in the week of the 10th to the 16th of May, men were busy clearing the land for the project.
In a visit to the site on Monday 11th May, 2009, Hon. Minister for Infrastructural Development and Urban Renewal who is also the Parliamentary Representative for the area, Julius Timothy, spoke with the Government Information Service and explained what the project entails.
“We are going to put houses in this area [Bellevue Rawle]. There is going to be five (5) on the western side and five others together with the necessary road infrastructure as well as water. The water lines are already in place along with the electricity. The infrastructure that is still needed is minimal. However, because the land is sloping, we are making preparations to cater for it by digging some trenches to put retaining walls so as to level the area.”

Mr. Timothy stated that Government has entered into a contractual arrangement with a private Chinese company for the work to commence on the construction of the first five (5) houses.
“These are going to be houses from China. We have already entered into a contract with a private Chinese company for the first five (5) houses. Upon completion, these five (5) houses will cost four hundred and ninety-five thousand East Caribbean dollars (XCD$495 000.00). However, these houses will be complete with two large bedrooms. The houses themselves will occupy eleven thousand square feet (11 000 sq ft) of floor space with modern amenities. It is expected that these homes will take between two and two and a half months to construct seeing that they will be arriving pre fabricated.”
Mr. Timothy pointed out that the houses will be built to meet hurricane standards and should arrive in Dominica by the end of May as they have already been shipped.

Government has said that once the houses are built, they will set a policy and plan as to how they will be distributed. The Minister for Urban Development is assuring his constituents that they will be given priority once the policy on these modern type houses has been established. |
