The Minister made this remark while addressing farmers and vendors at Market Day with a Difference at the Roseau Market last Saturday.
Hon. Matthew Walter, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry
“In order for Dominica to realise the representative benefits from this sector, the level of support to the sector must be increased. The Government of Dominica has recognised the important role of Agriculture and has identified this role in many policy documents. Government has translated its policy statements into action through various programmes and by establishing new initiatives in the sector. These include the following:
- Cabinet has granted approval for the establishment of an investment unit in the Ministry of Agriculture to spearhead the capital investment plan of the Ministry. This unit will also be responsible for indentifying feasible investment opportunities in the agricultural sector and promoting these investments to ensure and increase in the output from agriculture.
- In an effort to ensure that market opportunities are maximised, the Ministry of Agriculture will seek to encourage farmers to pursue contract arrangements with fresh produce buyers.”
