Mr. Anthony Scotland, General Manager Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation
The Princess Margaret Hospital is now equipped with a gasification unit procured by the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation. This means that the island’s bio medical waste is now being disposed off in an environmentally safe manner. Funding was made possible under the European Union O.E.C.S Project. This piece of equipment is the first of its kind to be used by any of the O.E.C.S islands.
According to Anthony Scotland, General Manager, of the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation, this new programme will cater to the needs of all medical facilities on the island.
“This is a solid waste programme where we are going to be trucking bio-medical waste from right around the island. We are going to be using this gasifier here at the Princess Margaret Hospital to burn it. This is a more sanitary way of getting rid of that type of garbage as that type of garbage is infections. Most of the wastes here are coming from clinics, labatories, doctors’
clinics and health centres in the communities.”
Mr. Scotland went on to say that the waste collected includes human body parts, human body fuel and all the equipment and material that is used to treat humans at these institutions.

Provisions have also been made to protect the workers on the field by providing them with the appropriate gear including masks and respirators. Persons operating the gasification unit at the Princess Margaret Hospital agree that this new equipment is necessary.
Meantime, the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation is announcing that a special collection vehicle has been
purchased to transport bio-medical waste on the island. Persons who will be directly involved in the collection of the bio-medical waste have already received training on the importance of adopting safety guidelines on the job. |
